In the last day in Barcelona it was raining hard in the morning so I stayed in the appartment. However after noon it cleared and so I took the Metro, Funicular and Cable Car to Montjuic Castle. There had been a Castle and even Light House on this hill overlooking Barcelona since Medieval times. There was a watchtower there in 1073. The present castle was constructed between 1753 and 1779. The hill was occupied by Spanish armies during the famous 1714 war when Catalonia was defeated. In later years it was a prison. Within the castle were several displays including photographs of burial sites throughout Spain where at least 20,000 people were buried during massacres carried out during the Spanish Civil war of 1936-1939 under General Franco.
